Nominate your favourite #mentalhealth tweeters in the #Twentalhealthawards 2013

Last year the first #Twentalhealthawards were held on the World of Mentalists blog, recognising the best in mental health tweeting. It’s now returning for a second time, and you lot get to decide the winners.

Meanwhile, the judges for the This Week in Mentalists Awards 2013 have been voting on the shortlist of mental health blogs and vlogs, and the results will be announced publicly on 21st December. Meanwhile, you can still nominate up to that date in the Best New Blog/Vlog and Most Sadly Missed Blog/Vlog categories by clicking here and leaving a comment.

For the #Twentalhealthawards, the categories are:

Patient Experience

Recovery

Campaigning

Subversive

Informative

Humour

Helpful

Neurodiversity

Therapy

Psychiatry

Psychology

Nursing

Social Work

Occupational Therapy

Professional Not Otherwise Specified (basically a professional involved in mental health who isn’t a psychiatrist, psychologist, nurse, social worker or OT)

Student

Academic

Carer

1. Submit your nominations by leaving them in a comment to the blog post announcing nominations (ie. this). Each individual can nominate as many Twitter accounts as they like, in as many categories as they like. However, they must submit at least two tweeters overall for nomination.

2. For impartiality reasons, my own Twitter feed @thus_spake_z, and that of this blog @quinonostante and my other blog @NotSoBigSociety, are not eligible for these awards.

3. NO SPAMMING/MANIPULATING THE NOMINATIONS! Suspicious nomination patterns may result in a tweeter being disqualified from the awards. In the event of any suspicious nomination patterns, the decision of the adjudicators (Phil and Dawn) will be final.

4. The tweeters with the most nominations in each category will be declared the winner. Up to two runner-up prizes in each category will also be awarded. To be eligible for a runner-up prize, a Twitter feed must have received at least three nominations.

5. Only public Twitter accounts are eligible for the awards.

6. You cannot nominate your own Twitter feed.

7. You can nominate a feed in more than one category (e.g. if you think a tweeter is both “subversive” and “helpful” you can nominate them in both). This would only not be the case if a feed bears no relation to the category title (e.g. nominating a tweeter for “nursing” if their content was nothing to do with nursing). In the event of any confusion on this, the adjudicators will make a final decision.

8. Winners will be announced on Saturday 4th January 2014.

    • @teaandtalking in the patient experience category for sharing her experience whilst on an acute inpatient ward
      @MarkOneinFour in the informative category

    • Thank you very much for the nomination , I’m honored to be in such good company from whom I think they both deserve to win.
      Sarah ( @acarerseyes ) for showing the world how much support for partners/family of people with mental illness is needed and how we often need to be braver than we really feel.
      @KarimS3D for getting dementia “out of the closet” Raising care standards and understanding. And promoting dementia friendly communities.

  9. I keep thinking of new tweeps to mention!

    – Ermintrude – @Ermintrude2 – SOCIAL WORK and INFORMATIVE
    – Mark Brown – @MarkOneinFour – INFORMATIVE and HELPFUL
    – Dr Jonathon Tomlinson – @MelloJonny – PROFESSIONAL NOS (he’s a GP) and CAMPAIGNING (for a better NHS and more compassionate care)

    – Dr Kate Granger – @GrangerKate – CAMPAIGNING and PROFESSIONAL NOS (for her #HelloMyNameIs campaign)
    – Charlotte Walker – @BipolarBlogger – PATIENT EXPERIENCE and CAMPAIGNING

  10. Hands down the best mental health tweeter is @daftlimmy

    Hear a genuine, bluff, Glaswegian take on mental illness.

    Genuinely radical to hear a big man from the Weeg talk about his depression

    Good on you mate.

    Nominated for humour, subversive and everything else

  11. I’d like to nominate @caffeinurse in the STUDENT, NURSING and CAMPAIGNING categories
    I’d like to nominate @MindCharity for INFORMATIVE and HELPFUL

  12. Nominations: both in informative category (if that applies to twitter feeds). in informative:

    For Twitter I’d nominate

    @cyberwhispers Open, respectful balanced and a real free speech champion

    If your still taking it for blogs (seems you might be) I’d recommend the site she blogs on http://discursiveoftunbridgewells.blogspot.co.uk/

    I’ve checked and this is new this year.

    No just mental health but some really thoughtful pieces and analysis.

  14. Some more nominations! This time in the PSYCHIATRY catagory (and others):

    – Niall Boyce – @niallpb – also in the CAMPAIGNING catagory. Niall was involved with the successful campaign to get Thorpe Park to change the name and contents of it’s “scary mental patient” live action horror maze Asylum. He got together 9 signatories including the Royal College of Psychiatrists, Time to Change, Rethink, et al. Though Thorpe Park stonewalled, it helped to get the message across. Niall also uses twitter to engage with a wide range of people and this has contributed to the new The Lancet Psychiatry journal, launching next spring.

    – Nuwan Dissinayaka – @nuwandiss – also in the CAMPAIGNING category. Nuwan was also involved with the successful Asylum campaign – in fact he reported Thorpe Park to police for hate crimes, which resulted in the management’s apology. Nuwan was a late comer to twitter, only joining to see what all the fuss about after getting involved with Asda’s “mental patient fancy dress party” controversy at the outset (see this blog http://digitalmentalhealth.co.uk/wp/?p=1073).

    – Dundee Psychiatry – @DundeePsych – Though not so active recently, this account is an example of good use of twitter to engage with students, professionals and mental health tweepsters.

    – Dopamine Diva – @Dopamine_Diva – also in the HUMOUR category – She’s just hilarious. We are planning a rock music workout DVD together (just joking – but wouldn’t it be fab?!)

  23. @MrJonnyBenjamin Campaigning – Jonny raises awareness on mental health issues and tweets about his personal experiences of mental health problems. He brings attention to things that might be helpful and dedicates time and effort to breaking mental health stigma. But he also uses his twitter account to connect with others and offer them friendship, support, wisdom and kindness- just what people need in all kinds of situations. I think he’s marvellous and without his twitter account, I couldn’t connect with him like this, so he deserves an award for this :o)

  26. @Onemoremum gives an honesty and openness that is always thought-provoking, helpful, and real. The person I watch out for most….

  27. @MrJonnyBenjamin for the “Campaigning” award, because of his amazing YouTube videos that have been incredibly useful for so many, and at the same time, raising awareness continuously through social media.

    @XebNotlaw for the “Campaining” award – despite her own struggles, Bex has built a non-profit organisation from scratch called Minds Like Ours which is a peer-to-peer support network. It has an online forum, support groups and regular Hangouts to help members, and their numbers are growing daily.

  28. I’d like to nominate @schizophrenicGB (Katy) for patient experience her blog and Still Here magazine are informative and increase awareness & knowledge of living with MH conditions

  29. @mentalhealthcop for profession otherwise not stated and HELPFUL
    @nathanconstable for profession otherwise not stated and HELPFUL

    @BPDFFS @Sectioned_ @teaandtalking and @schizophrenicGB for Patient Experience tweeter!

    @acarerseyes and @dragonmisery for #carer

    @DuckBeaki and @SignSaveLives for campaigning

  31. I nominate @thistangledweb in the categories #helpful and #informative for her supportive tweets reaching out to survivors of abuse.

    I nominate @teaandtalking in the category #patientexperience for all of the brave and honest tweets made whilst inpatient.

    I nominate @BPDFFS in the categories #helpful and #campaigning for all the work done for #bpdchat and her dedication to raising awareness.

    I nominate @amanda-stand in the category #helpful for creating the inspiring and useful #DearMentalHealthProfessionals hashtag.

  32. Now some nominations for NURSING TWEETER (and other categories):

    – Katie Sutton – @caffeinurse – student mental health nurse, for her awesome work challenging Thorpe Park’s appallingly stigmatising Asylum “scary mental patient” live action horror maze: using the power of social media, she got a petition signed by 6,000 people which she personally delivered to Thorpe Park, as well as giving fab media interviews. A real twitter star. <== I would also nominate Katie in the CAMPAIGNING TWEETER and STUDENT TWEETER categories.

    – Nurse with Glasses – @nurse_w_glasses – Last year's winner, community mental health nurse, for tirelessly promoting the best in mental health care and challenging stigma and discrimination. Her 20 Commandments for Mental Health Workers are excellent, as are was her most recent blog post calling for a smoking ban for mental health workers at work (which proved rather controversial with some!) http://20commandments.blogspot.co.uk/2013/11/a-smoking-ban-for-mental-health-workers.html <== I would also like to nominate NWG for INFORMATIVE TWEETER and HELPFUL TWEETER categories.

    – Teresa Chinn – @AgencyNurse – Nurse, for the fantastic work she's doing with @WeNurses to promote social media engagement with nurses. We hosted a tweet chat on constipation in August (a lot of psychiatric meds cause constipation), helping to open up a topic that can be tough to talk about. Early in 2014, we're doing a tweet chat for tips and advice on student and newbie mental health nurses (the topic will be broader than this blog, but it gives a flavour – http://sectioneduk.wordpress.com/2013/02/11/mental-health-nursing-top-tips-for-newbies/).

    – @NatalieMHN and @MrsGracePoole, co-facilitators of @MHnursechat, a fortnightly tweet chat for mental health nurses and anyone else interested in mental health. I can never make Monday nights, but the tweet chats look really interesting and are a great way to bring together people from all walks of life who wouldn't otherwise get to meet – especially important in mental health, which can be polarised. <== I would also like to nominate Natalie in the STUDENT TWEETER category.

  33. Now for some nominations for Patient Experience tweeter:

    – Katie Grey – @SchizophrenicGB – for tweeting about her ongoing experience of inpatient psychiatric care and for tweeting links to her hilarious and insightful blog. She really shines a light on the day to day experience of managing schizophrenia and the pros and cons of the treatment she’s received (including injections). She’ll be on the ward over Christmas too.

    – Helen Hutchings – @teaandtalking – for tweeting about her experience of inpatient care earlier in the year and shining a light on what it’s like to be on a mental health ward – Here’s a blog about an aspect of that experience, with Victoria Betton – http://digitalmentalhealth.co.uk/wp/?p=1126

    – Skye – Secret Schizophrenic – @SecretSchizo – for tweeting about her experiences as a young person managing schizophrenia and the side effects of medication, as well as answering any questions people have about mental health topics. Here’s her blog http://secretschizophrenic.tumblr.com/

  34. For me if has to be Francesca Martinez for her unceasing fight to get the WoW petition to parliament. People with mental health issues will benefit just as much from her work.

  35. Thanks for hosting the Twental Health Awards for the second year running! I’m sure I’ll come up with lots more nominations (I know I need at least 2 for my nominations to count), but my first one is for Bexatron – @DuckBeaki – who started the #mentalpatient hashtag in response to Asda’s “mental patient fancy dress costume”. What a fantastic response that was! I’d put that in the Campaigning, Humour or Subversive category. http://storify.com/SectionedUK/how-did-the-mentalpatient-hashtag-start

      • @SchizophrenicGB for patient experience
        @Allyc375 @BPDFFS for recovery
